Personality:
Max is very much the opposite of his baby brother. He is quiet and reserves and is usually found alone whilst out jogging or reading. He spends most of his time outside the house he owns with his brother and has become quite a good tracker. He has no idea where these powers came from but guesses his brothers changing has triggered them.
He hates dreaming now, often finding him in trouble when he falls asleep at work though he can’t help it. He can however; change the path the future is heading after seeing these vague visions.
He comes across as shy to most and is generally, a very sweet, loyal guy. He doesn’t really like the supernatural people of Somber much but is keeping civil for the sake of his brother until they can move on. His hunting is secret and he hasn’t told anyone about it yet. Unlike his brother, he spends maybe a bit too much time thinking about things.
He likes to be alone most of the time, especially now he’s in a town full of people who can do freaky things. The only person he really understands and is understood by is Tate and he will do anything for him. The only time you really see max get angry is when someone offends or hurts his baby brother. Apart from that, he is good at keeping everything locked up inside.
When it comes to the ladies, he doesn’t make it obvious that he likes them; in fact he will usually shy away more. Even more so if he senses them looking at him or liking him in the slightest. He doesn’t want to fall in love as he knows he needs to move on again soon and will have to leave them behind. That and the fact he’s worried his brother will eat them.
Likes: Keeping a low profile, Drinking to forget his problems, Reading and writing, Poetry, Learning about anything and everything, being around his brother, Skateboarding, Campfires, Sleeping all morning, Being alone, Jogging, Being blunt with people.
Dislikes: Rudeness, People talking or trying to hurt his brother, Vampires and other supernatural things, Work, Cooking, Cleaning, Shopping, Public transport, Over-crowded places, Christmas and Halloween, Cold days, Daydreaming when he’s at work or out and about.
Strengths: His powers, His love for his brother, His quick thinking, His ability to move on and forget so quickly, His ability to talk himself out of pretty much any trouble, His strength and speed when fighting (his brother and him make quite the team), Being able to find anyone he wants easily.
Weaknesses: His brother, Being to forgiving, Not showing how he feels, Being a bit of a loner, Pretty girls.
Fears: Losing Tate in anyway, His past, Sometimes his dreams if they aren’t good, being around a lot of people.
Weapon of choice: This varies depending what he has on him. He has a lovely Katar (a punching dagger that is hidden up his sleeve usually) which he carries around everywhere with him and a wonderful collection of shuriken (throwing dagger stars) which he keeps in the attack along with his arbalest (usually kept on him too in his rucksack). His attic is pretty much a museum of weapons he’s picked up over the years and he loves to collect and learn about them. He’ll use whatever is handier at the time though.
History: Both Max and Tate had pretty normal lives at one point. They were born and raised on the coast of California where they spent many summers by the beach, skateboarding along the promenades, partying around campfires and what not. Their parents worked very hard, Michael being a psychologist and Marie a teacher of psychology at the local university. They worked long hours which meant that often Max and Tate were left on their own with a nanny who also cleaned the house. They didn’t mind, they had a strong relationship and Tate always knew his brother would look after him.
When Maxxie started high school both Tate and himself thought it was strange. They hadn’t really been apart before and this is when Tate started acting out. His confidence grew and he’d often end up in detention or being sent home for doing something silly. Max kept his head down and got stuck in with his work. He wasn’t sure what he wanted to do when he grew up but wanted to excel in everything he could. The more they grew, the more obvious the two young boy’s differences became. Still, Max would still get his brother out of trouble whenever he needed and Tate would always invite his brother along to the high school parties and remind him that he was still young and needed to have fun once in a while.
On the year Max was going to graduate high school, Tate started seeing a young girl named Kira and being young and foolish, they were soon engaged. Of course, it wasn’t in Tate’s nature to stick to one thing and would easily grow bored. He’d turn to Max for advice who in return told him he was being a little silly in rushing things and that he should enjoy his life first. He didn’t break it off though and their relationship slowly put a lot of stress on them both.
It was on a night that Halloween fell on that their mother received a phone call from Kira. Tate had gone to a party in the next town with her, split up with her and had fallen ill and wouldn’t wake up. They thought he had taken something and from the panic they heard in the background, it was clear that something was very wrong. Marie and Michael left Max at home while they drove out to pick him up. Max hadn’t bothered with going to the party as he was due to start travelling the world the next day, an eight month trip he had planned for getting the grades he wanted and graduating.
Michael and Marie never made it home. Neither did Tate, at least not the Tate Max knew. When Max woke the next morning, two police officers were at his door. They explained they had found his parents car a few miles outside of town and needed to know where Tate was. Of course, Max didn’t know so didn’t tell them. They then went on to explain that his parent’s bodies had been found in nearby woods. It looked like an animal attack and they were barely recognisable. There was no sign of Tate though but his phone was found at the scene putting him in the spot as the main suspect.
Once they had left, Tate realised he wouldn’t be able to take the trip so went upstairs to unpack and sit down to think about what this now meant. In his room, which he had shared with Tate all his life, he found Tate sitting on the window ledge with a strange, sickening smile across his face. Sure enough, he was covered in blood and looked really very sick. When he spoke, he sounded different though Max couldn’t explain how. He said something miraculous had happened. He’d met a boy by the name of Alfie and the two had hooked up at the party. He said that Alfie was a strange, mysterious boy who had caused him so much pain yet so much pleasure at the same time. He hadn’t been from the world we know but from somewhere dark where the dead danced every night. It was a lot for Max to take in and obviously didn’t believe him at first. Even when Tate started chewing on his own arm he thought his brother had simply gone insane. It was when he told of how he’d woken up in the car, being suffocated by a horrific feeling of hunger and killed his parents to drain them did Max realise something had happened to his baby brother for sure. It was after Tate turned on him did Tate realise that this behaviour needed to be kept under control, the hunger and the short temper. To this day, Max still has long scars running across his body and bite marks from where he’s allowed his brother to feed in times of need.
They weren’t stupid, they knew they couldn’t stay. Tate was one of the most wanted in California by now and wouldn’t last long being surrounded by humans all the time. He’d murder every last one of them if he ever lost control. Packing their things, they came to the decision that they had nothing to stick around for now and should leave. For two years they travelled around different states in America. They had to move on so much because Tate kept finding himself in trouble or leaving too many dead bodies lying around after nights out. He always found the drunken people were the easiest to lure away from their friends only to be pounced on and brutally murdered by him.
Max, as always, cleared up after his brother and dragged him along. He knew Tate was becoming more trouble but also knew that without him, Tate would soon be dead too, if it be possible.
Max vowed to find the guy that changed their lives forever and one day kill him. He grew a burning hatred towards the supernatural though still loves his brother unconditionally. They settled in to a small town named Somber falls, somewhere where Tate couldn’t cause as much trouble as usual and somewhere he was more welcome. Turns out, most of the population of this town were supernatural in some ways meaning they had a fair chance against Tate when he lost it. It was perfect. Still, Max doesn’t think they’ll stick around long but in the meantime, he can practise his hunting skills and also learn more about the powers he has noticed he’s picked up in the last couple of years. He believes they have something to do with his brother, his brother’s change setting something of inside him like a trigger.
